Trust Celebrates 50 Years!
My 15th anniversary as the
Warden has suddenly crept up on me! And coincidently, it is in the year
that the Essex Wildlife Trust is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Our
Open Day this year will be just one of the "50 Events for 50 Years", a
landmark celebration of all that the Trust has achieved from its quiet
initiation in 1959 by an enthusiastic bunch of Essex naturalists concerned
about protecting Essex wildlife for future generations.
In the 50 years since, the charity
has continued to strive to save important wildlife areas, to manage habitats
for wildlife and to educate and encourage people of all ages to appreciate
and enjoy the natural world around them. Today, Essex Wildlife Trust is
the county's leading conservation charity with the support of more than
36,000 members, 80 staff and 1,500 volunteers. It manages and protects
over 7,300 acres of land on 87 nature reserves, with a nature park and
7 visitor centres under its management.
A Special Open Day for Tollesbury
Wick - Saturday, May 16th
Our
annual Open Day this year is one of the Trust's featured "50 Events for
50 years" and so we are hoping for a bumper attendance to help us celebrate
this milestone in the Trust's history.
As I write we are well into
both calving and lambing, as are the birds with nesting, so there will
be plenty to see. There will be guided walks, activities for youngsters,
a demonstration of hand spinning of the renowned Shetland wool, as well
as an opportunity to talk to the wardens about their work.
Light refreshments will also
be available.
We will be open from 1000
to 1300. Access will be from the seawall as usual. Parking is available
at Woodrolfe Green car park (G.R. 963106) on the left-hand side of Woodrolfe
Road. From there, follow the signs to the marina, then take the footpath
through the marina to the seawall.
The reserve entrance is about
500 yards along the seawall on the right hand side. Total walking distance
around half a mile. If you have limited mobility please call one of the
wardens so that we can try to make alternative arrangements for you. Either:
Jonathan Smith on 01621 868628 ( evenings) or 07881 815996 (day), or Mike
Sandison on 01621741351 (evenings) or 07754208279 (day).

The
Logo?
Well you may wonder!
Is it a bird, or a tree or
a fish or a representation of all three? Or what?
Well, it's a badger! First used
in 1970!
